Melanie Cohen Education

Ontario Certified Teacher  •  Private Tutor

Helping students become stronger learners — and more confident people.

One-on-one academic and developmental support that starts with the student, not a program. Melanie looks at how each child learns, communicates and builds confidence, then shapes every session around them.

More Than Tutoring

Strong students aren't built on grades alone.

It's feeling confident to ask a question.

Organized to tackle an assignment.

Comfortable to contribute to a group.

Or supported to try something they once thought they couldn't do.

Sessions are built around the individual student rather than a predetermined program — someone who explains things differently, makes room for the question they were hesitant to ask in class, and reminds them that making mistakes and taking risks are part of the learning process.

“The goal isn't simply to get through tonight's homework. It's to build skills students can take with them.”

Student Development

Skills for school. Skills for life.

One-on-one development sessions give children and teens a supportive environment to strengthen the social-emotional and learning skills that shape how they participate, communicate and navigate school.

Confidence Building Communication Teamwork Responsibility Organization Problem Solving Independence

Sessions can also combine both — academic instruction alongside the broader skills a student needs to become a more confident, independent learner. Student development sessions are educational and skills-based and are not a substitute for therapy, counselling or mental health services.

Sessions adapt to the student, not the other way around

Learning Through Curiosity

Learning doesn't always have to look like studying.

Melanie's graduate research at The PlayLab at OISE/University of Toronto focused on play and games in education, and that experience still shapes the way she thinks about learning.

Depending on a student's age, goals and learning style, sessions can incorporate conversation, games, problem-solving and creative activities alongside more traditional instruction.

The goal isn't to lower expectations. It's to find approaches that help students engage, understand and remember.

Getting Started

Personalized from the very beginning.

01
Let's Connect

A parent consultation to talk about your child, their strengths, current challenges and what you're hoping to accomplish.

02
Understand

Melanie gets to know how your child learns and identifies where individualized support could make the biggest difference.

03
Personalize

Sessions are designed around the student's age, learning style, curriculum and goals.

04
Build Momentum

As skills strengthen, sessions evolve to encourage greater confidence, independence and ownership over learning.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Does tutoring follow my child's school curriculum?

Yes. Sessions are built around what your child is actually working on — their classroom materials, assignments and assessments — alongside the Ontario curriculum expectations for their grade. Where there are gaps in foundational skills, those are addressed as part of the plan rather than set aside.

Can sessions combine academic tutoring and confidence building?

Absolutely, and many families choose exactly that. A session might spend part of its time on essay structure and part of it on how to ask a teacher for clarification, or practise presenting the work out loud. The balance is set with you and adjusted as your child's needs shift.

What happens during a student development session?

Sessions are practical and skills-based. Depending on the student's age and goals, that can look like setting and tracking goals, practising a presentation, working through a group-work scenario, building organization systems, or rehearsing how to advocate for themselves at school. Younger students often work through games, conversation and creative activities.

How often should my child have tutoring?

It depends on the student's goals and schedule. Many families start with a consistent weekly session, which builds momentum without overloading the week; others book more intensively around a specific unit, assignment or exam period. Melanie will recommend a starting point during the consultation and adjust as things progress.

Are sessions in person or online?

Both are available. Some families prefer in-person sessions, while others find online works better for their schedule — and either can suit a student well. Get in touch to talk through the details and what would work best for your family.

Do you work with students who are already doing well academically?

Yes. Support isn't only for students who are struggling. Strong students often want enrichment, more sophisticated writing, better study systems for a heavier course load, or support with the parts of school that grades don't measure — speaking up, leading a group, or managing the pressure they put on themselves.

How involved are parents in the process?

As involved as you'd like to be. Not every student needs the same thing, and those needs can change through the school year — so Melanie keeps communication open with families, shares what she's seeing, and adapts the focus as goals evolve. You know your child best, and that context shapes the work.

Let's Talk

Every student deserves to feel capable.

Whether your child needs academic support, greater confidence or simply a learning environment that feels more personal, let's talk about what the right support could look like.
